Neurodivergent/Autism Decal & Literacy Project
DECAL UPDATE – Thank you for your interest. At this time, BCACP is not distributing decals. Please check back here for future updates.
The British Columbia Association of Chiefs of Police (BCACP), the BC Law Enforcement Diversity Network (BCLEDN), AutismBC and Pacific Family Autism Network are pleased to introduce the Decal & Literacy Project.
The initiative is a collaborative effort to foster safe, more effective interactions between police officers and the neurodivergent/autistic community by providing comprehensive training accompanied by visual cues for cars and houses that prompt police officers to adapt their communication style and approach.
The project speaks to our collective dedication to inclusivity and empathy. It signifies progress in making sure that all people, no matter their neurological differences, feel safe and supported both on the road and in their homes. This initiative is designed to create connections between law enforcement and the autism community, while promoting a culture of awareness and kindness that benefits everyone.
HOW DOES THE DECAL WORK?
When displayed on houses or vehicles, decals prompt police to adapt their approach, expectations, and communication styles to accommodate the unique needs and sensitivities of neurodivergent/autistic individuals. The decal promotes safety and reassurance that individuals are likely to receive appropriate and empathetic responses from first responders.
NEW! DECAL MAGNETS
Decal magnets are now available as an alternative to the decal stickers.
WHERE CAN I PICK-UP A DECAL?
Please note – At this time, BCACP is not distributing decals. Please check back here for future updates.
WHERE SHOULD I PLACE THE DECAL?
For vehicles, place the sticker decal on the rear bumper to the left of the license plate. Police officers are trained to approach vehicles from behind and check license plates, making this location highly visible. The magnet decal can be placed on the vehicle rear window, similar to the location of a “N” – new driver magnet. For residences, place the decal near the doorbell.
WHO SHOULD USE THESE DECALS?
Any neurodivergent/autistic person and/or family members are encouraged to use the decals to signal their presence in their vehicles and homes.
HOW IS LITERACY INCLUDED?
In addition to the decal, a specialized training for police officers will be available to enhance their understanding and provide tools to promote safe interactions and empathetic responses.
